Evaporating Haze, the debut EP from Arlington, VA’s SleepMarks, officially releases on 11/17/20. Comprised of veteran Washington, DC area musicians: James Smith, Pierre Davis and Fred Burton, SleepMarks is unique in one sense. Although all three musicians have 20 plus years experience in the Washington, DC music scene, none have ever performed on the instrument they perform on in SleepMarks. Bassist James Smith and drummer Pierre Davis are guitarists by nature. Smith was guitarist/vocalist for DC locals Maple, and Davis played guitar for DC punk rockers The Chance, and is the guitarist/vocalist for We Capillaries. Burton, who spent 20 plus years drumming for DC locals Gist, handles guitar and vocals for the first time in his musical career.
Other than the switching of instruments though, SleepMarks sound should be familiar to fans of DC rock music. Energized post punk rock pulverizes the listener, whilst lyrics dealing with a changing city (Anywhere, USA) and the onset of middle age (New Ballad of Aging.). It is not a full on post punk rock show though, (The Periphery) & (Underground) showcase a willingness to mellow down and build to an emotional crescendo. Lead track (Confrontation) harkens back to a time when music was all that mattered while lyrically dealing with the challenge of self awareness and acceptance, something we could all use a little more of.
